Cuba, China to Set Up Joint Venture Company for Electronic

Elio Pacheco, director of GE pointed out that this project will allow Cuba to reduce imports while boosting the capacity and quality of the local industry in technology and building processes.

Pacheco said they aspire to manufacture products that satisfy local demand and could eventually be exported. He added that this new company will build electrical appliances, desktop computers, laptops and their spare parts and others like washing machine, air conditioners and lightning.

Miosotis Montalvo, GE business VP, highlighted the support given by the Haier Corporation Cuba, thanks to its access to cheaper raw materials and with the state-of-art technology it has to guarantee high quality products.

Montalvo mentioned the presence of Haier TV sets in the domestic market as one of the main achievements of the cooperation between the Chinese company and the Cuban group, which ensembles them locally. Haier made a presentation of electronic and computing products this Thursday at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba with the attendance of its directives and Cuban authorities. #

Chavez asking Cubans to 'bomb clouds' amid drought

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez says he will join a team of Cuban scientists on flights to "bomb clouds" to create rain amid a severe drought that has aroused public anger due to water and electricity rationing. Chavez, who has asked Venezuelans to take three-minute showers to save water, said the Cubans had arrived in Venezuela and were preparing to fly specially equipped aircraft above the Orinoco river.

"I'm going in a plane; any cloud that crosses me, I'll zap it so that it rains," Chavez said at a ceremony late on Saturday with family members of five Cubans convicted of spying in the United States.

Many countries have programs aimed at altering weather patterns, commonly known as cloud seeding, although the effectiveness of such techniques is disputed.
Firing silver iodine at clouds is one common method. China uses rockets loaded with the chemical to spur rainfall in arid regions. Chavez did not say what technology the Cubans will use. Venezuela has suffered water and electricity shortages this month after a drought caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon led to critically low water levels at several reservoirs in the oil-exporting nation. The government has been criticized for poor planning after it was forced to impose strict water rationing in the capital Caracas and power rationing in other parts of the country.

Venezuela produces much of its electricity from hydroelectric projects, including the giant El Guri dam close to the Orinoco. Chavez provides Cuba with subsidized oil and is a close friend of the communist island's former leader Fidel Castro.

Chavez said Castro was in excellent health and invited the Cuban to participate in a trade conference he is hosting next month in Havana. Castro has not been seen in public since undergoing intestinal surgery in 2006.

Alexandra feared arrest

Alexandra Burke has moved house - to avoid being arrested.

The 'Bad Boys' singer begged her record company to find her a new property after being intimidated by a group of youths who shouted abuse and threw rocks, amid fears she would retaliate with violence. She told Wonderland magazine: "I get all the kids on the street I've lived in throwing s**t at my car."I have to move away because I'll end up hitting one of them and getting arrested. That's it. Career over. "It's the natural reaction when someone comes up to you and starts on you and gives you a slap first."

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old star has helped save a British toddler's life.

The singer stepped in after hearing about the plight of one-year-old Sophie Atay who needed £500,000 for life-saving cancer treatment in America and persuaded music mogul Simon Cowell - a judge on UK TV talent show 'The X Factor', which Alexandra won last year - to donate "tens of thousands" of pounds to the cause. Alexandra said: "As soon as I heard about Sophie I was so touched I knew I had to help. "I called Simon Cowell and he said, 'Let's do it.' He wanted to donate straight away. I am so happy that we have managed to help Sophie and I am sure she can pull through now."

Jamelia to Divorce

Jamelia is getting divorced.

The 'Superstar' singer moved out of the home she shared with soccer player Darren Byfield - with who she raises two children, Teja, her eight-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, and Tiani, four - last week and the pair are set to start legal proceedings to end their 16-month union.

No reason has been given for their split. The couple confirmed in a statement said: "It is with regret that Jamelia and Darren Byfield confirm they are splitting up and getting a divorce.

"No one else is involved. Their priority is naturally their two children." Jamelia, 28, and 33-year-old Darren have seen their relationship fraught with difficulty. The couple separated in August 2007 amid rumours the sportsman had had an affair, but reconciled a few months later and married in a lavish ceremony in June 2008.

A friend said: "Their relationship has been through lots of ups and downs. Jamelia took him back after he was accused of straying but the last year has been tough. "Jamelia decided to leave this week and there is no going back this time. They are both devastated, but have vowed to remain on civil terms for Tiani." The divorce announcement is in stark contrast to Jamelia's recent comments about the future of her family.

She said this summer that she and Darren were hoping to have more children. She said: "We definitely want more children, but not yet - I want to concentrate on my career for a while."

Bolt's coach Mills resigns as head of Jamaican national team

Glen Mills has resigned after 22 years as head of the Jamaican national track and field team but he will remain coach of the Usain Bolt's Racers Track Club. Mills plans to stop working with the national team so he can concentrate more time on coaching the club team which includes Olympic triple gold medallist Usain Bolt, the Jamaica Observer reported Friday.

"I feel that after being head coach for every world championship team, except the inaugural one and the one in 2003, and every Olympic Games since 1988, that's a good run, and the crowning glory in Beijing," Mills said. "It's good to quit while you're ahead."  Mills made a name for himself after Bolt won the 100 metres and 200 metres in world record times of 9.69 and 19.30 seconds. Howard Aris, president of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA), said the announcement did not come as a surprise. "As far back as five or six years ago when I took over as president it has been discussed," Aris told a Jamaican sports radio show.

Mills replaced the late Herb McKenley as national team head coach in 1987. He said he as pleased Jamaica's track and field had achieved it highest level of recognition after winning 24 medals at the last two major global events -- the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and the IAAF World Championships in Berlin earlier this year. Jamaican athletes won six gold medals in Beijing and seven gold in Berlin. Jamaica won a total of 33 Olympic medals under Mills' guidance. Mills considering retiring nine years ago after the Sydney Olympics because he felt was time then for someone younger to take over.
"I took the decision then, that it was time to allow younger people to take up the mantle, but the then administration ask me to continue for a couple more years so that somebody could be groomed to take over," he said.
