60,000 Join Madrid's VivAmerica Celebration

Some 60,000 people, mainly Latin American, danced and sang their way down a central Madrid boulevard for four hours late Oct. 11, on the eve of the Oct. 12 Day of Hispanity, which marks the anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Americas in 1492.

This year's musical accompaniment carried atop three open-ended trucks were Argentina's Fito Páez, veteran Dominican bachata artist Victor Victor, and Bogota-based Afro-Colombian funk act Mojarra Eléctrica.

Organized for the third consecutive year by the Madrid cultural center Casa de America, several local institutions and some 50 Madrid-based Latin American organizations, the five-day VivAmerica celebration was launched in 2007 to exalt Latin America and Hispanic culture. VivAmerica is also staged simultaneously in Bogotá (Colombia), Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), and Cádiz (Spain).

Some 45% of the 1.1 million immigrants in the Madrid region (pop. 6.5 million) are Latin American in origin.

Former flight attendant sues Oprah over sex claim

Oprah Winfrey has had pretty good luck in litigation during her career.

Back in 1998 she won a Texas defamation case brought by cattlemen who weren't thrilled when she said she'd sworn off burgers on a show about mad cow disease. This year she beat back a trillion-dollar lawsuit by a poet who claimed copyright infringement, and she recently filed an aggressive suit against marketers who claimed she put her stamp of approval on dietary supplements.

Now, a former flight attendant on Winfrey's private jet says she was fired after being accused of having sex during a flight in June, and she's filed a federal lawsuit against Winfrey's production company denying the allegations.

Taio Cruz - Rokstar

With his chart topping single Break Your Heart, 26 year-old Londoner Taio Cruz has firmly established himself as a genuine solo artist in his own right. His hugely anticipated second album, Rokstarr is available from October 12th through Universal Records.

The album features the number 1 smash as well his Top 3 collaboration with Tinchy Stryder Take You Back. Special guests on the album will include superhot rising US star Ke$ha and Tinchy Stryder. Although Break Your Heart is his first solo release this year, Taio has already enjoyed an extremely productive and successful 2009. As well as completing work on Rokstarr, the follow up to the 150,000 selling debut Departure, Taio has been writing and producing for Cheryl Cole's feverishly anticipated new record, has scored his second number 1 UK single having written the Tinchy Stryder/Amelle smash Never Leave You, as well as writing and performing on Tinchy's earlier top 3 smash Take You Back.

"Break Your Heart" is Taio's first solo release since exploding onto the UK scene with the massive chart smashes Come On Girl and I Can Be, both taken from his Gold-selling debut album Departure. The critical and commercial success of the singles and album quickly established Cruz as one of the most exciting British artists to emerge in recent years. In the last two years Taio's writing and production skills have been enlisted by among others the Sugababes, Leona Lewis, Usher, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Pussycat Dolls, JLS, Anastacia, Alexandra Burke and many more, while Simon Cowell called Departure "one of the best albums of 2008".

Prior to the release and success of Departure, Taio was already a major player in the US with super producer Dallas Austin singling him out as "the new Babyface". Living and working in the US he had cut his teeth writing and recording with the likes of Tricky Stewart, the man behind Rihanna's Umbrella. In fact the song was originally earmarked for Taio to perform, until Jay-Z heard it, offered it to Rhianna and the rest as they say …. Taio's transatlantic work continued with the London wunderkind writing & producing for a string of A list artists. Quickly recognised as THE go-to writer/producer in the UK, Taio has since worked with some of the UK's biggest names while writing and recording aerial for his second album.

The success of the number 1 single, whose video has now received an astonishing 1.3 million views on Youtube, and the imminent release of the new album, offers further proof, if proof were needed, that in Taio Cruz, the UK has its very own top-drawer artist/songwriter/producer who can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best that American pop has to offer.

New Michael Jackson single hits the airwaves

Michael Jackson's new single "This Is It" began streaming online and playing across the radio airwaves Monday, nearly four months after the "king of pop" died of a prescription drug overdose aged 50.

The track, which features backing vocals by Jackson's brothers, opens with a soft, soulful introduction and the lines: "This is it, here I stand/I'm the light of the world, I feel grand."
